What is French polishing?
French polishing is the name given to the process of applying many thin coats of an alcohol and shellac mix along the grain of the wood to give a very high gloss finish to the surface, it enhances the colour of the wood and gives a reflective finish. This finishing technique was very popular in France during the Victorian era, where it was commonly used on mahogany and other expensive types of wood. This technique removes scratches, watermarks, and dents, leaving a beautiful hard wearing shiny finish.
